With marriage, she left the profession of nursing, to devote her life to providing her family with love, good cooking and many values. Elsye was immaculate in her dress and sense of style. She sewed beautiful clothes for herself and the children. Her pies were legendary. We loved her so and we would selfishly keep her forever if we could. She will be greatly missed and always remembered in our hearts. The family wants to give special thanks to the Arden Park Villa for their years of loving care and to the Kaiser Hospital (Morse Ave) staff who provided compassionate and professional palliative care. A.C."⁹ An item appeared in the 25 Sep 1811 issue of The Scioto Gazette: "Taken up by George Lease, living in Ross county, Concord township, one brown horse, supposed to be 15 and 1/2 hands high, left hind foot white, shod before, the left steel toed, has been foundered [lamed], and is supposed to be three years old last spring: appraised to $50 by us. This 28th day of August, 1811. Thomas Clossen, Adam Cayler, Appraisers. I do certify the above to be a true copy from my estray book. Sept. 7, 1811. John M'Niell, j.p."¹⁰

Adam Caylor bought 301 acres on Sugar Creek from Thomas Holt of Harrison County, Kentucky on 14 November 1815 for $602. The land was adjacent to land of Jacob Caylor, which Jacob had bought from Holt the week before.¹¹ Adam paid taxes in 1820 on three parcels in Fayette County: 408 acres on Sugar Creek bought from Thomas Holt, 24 acres on Paint Creek bought from Clement Biddle, and 49 acres on Paint Creek bought from William Banett.¹² Adam and Susanna, living in Fayette County Ohio, sold 77 acres 12 Jun 1820 on the waters of the Little North Fork of Paint Creek to Frederick Noacher. This property abutted land of Peter F Archer, Jacob Duay and Henry Crips.²

Adam Caylor appeared on the 1820 federal census of Fayette Co, Ohio, enumerated 7 Aug 1820. Household of Adam Caylor: one male 18-26, one male >45 (Adam), one female <10, one female 16-26, and one female 26-45 (presumably Susannah). The family was enumerated next to that of Jacob Gossard, Adam's son-in-law. The census information is consistent with Adam's family in 1820.¹³

Adam paid taxes in 1821 on the same parcels he paid for in 1820 although the 49 acre parcel was now noted on Sugar Creek rather than Paint Creek.¹⁴ Adam paid taxes in 1822 on the same three parcels as in prior years - the 49 acre parcel was listed on Sugar Creek again.¹⁵ Adam paid taxes in 1823 on the same three parcels as in prior years but the 408 acre parcel had decreased to 307 acres so there must have been a land sale in 1822-23.¹⁶ Adam paid taxes on the 24 and 49 acre parcels in 1824. He must have sold the remaining 307 acres in 1823-24.¹⁷ About 1825 Adam left for Adams County, for reasons explained in the Oct 1840 note.¹⁸

Adam Caylor of Ross County, Ohio, bought 116 acreson 18 Aug 1826 for $125 in Adams County, Ohio, from Richard C Anderson and his wife Sarah through attorney Allan Latham of Jefferson County, Kentucky. The land was on the waters of Hills fork of Eagle Creek, part of Thomas Hill’s survey.¹⁹

Adam Caylor appeared on the 1840 federal census of Fayette Co, Ohio, enumerated 1 Jun 1840. Household of Adam Caylor: one male 60-70 (Adam) and one female 50-60 (presumably Susannah), residing in Concord Township. Jacob Wright, husband of Anna Caylor, was enumerated in the adjacent dwelling.³⁰

A broadside authored by Allen Latham was published by the Chillicothe Advertiser in Oct 1840. This publication was apparently prompted by Mr Latham's upcoming bid for election to some office in Fayette County. Two extracts explain the circumstances of Adam Caylor – the first is the "slander" article in the Fayette Washingtonian of October 3: "Farmers of Fayette you all remember the case of poor old Adam Caylor. This is the same Allen Latham who dispossessed Adam of his farm in your county, and turned him out of door, houseless and poor."
The second extract is Latham's reply in the broadside: "Having noticed a slanderous statement in the Washingtonian of the 3d inst., respecting a land contract between myself and Adam Caylor, and also another contract with James Shackelford, I have presumed that short, but a plain statement, is all that is needed to prove the falsity of these charges – the facts here given can be proved from written documents now in my possession:
First – As to the charge of using the records of my office for the purpose of speculating in those cases; it is answered simply by another fact, that I did not hold the office of "Surveyor General" till long after these transactions took place, as is well known.
The facts as to Cayler are shortly these: – He held a defective claim to land, under Thomas Holt, then deceased, who died insolvent and could give him no adequate remedy. Holt's claim proved invalid. The land, or part of it, had been granted to me by patent, and Caylor having made some improvements on the land, I purchased his claim and improvements by giving him other improved land in payment thereof, in Adams county, where he went and resided for some time, and afterwards sold it. This happened from 15 to 18 years ago, and is now raked up for the first time to my knowledge, to subserve an election campaign. There never has been any difficulty or unfriendliness between Mr. Caylor and myself."¹⁸

     Adam Caylor was born in April 1824 in Indiana.¹ He was the son of John P Caylor and Rachel Ann Moore. Adam Caylor married Mary "Polly" Mitchell, daughter of Hiram Mitchell and Lucretia [-?-], 1 April 1844 in Hendricks Co, Indiana.² Adam Caylor died 24 May 1908 at age 84.³ He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Unionville, Appanoose Co, Iowa.³
     Based on the appearance of Elender, Adam's older sister, in Indiana during the 1850 census (taken in September) as well as her being in Adam's household in Iowa during the 1850 census (taken in December), it's likely that Adam's family, along with Elender, migrated to Appanoose County, Iowa, about October 1850. This is supported by the 1856 Iowa state census.⁴ He appeared on the 1850 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 6 December 1850. Household: Adam Kaler (25), Mary (22), John (5), James (3), William (1), Ellen Kaler (27), and Martha J (7), residing in Washington Township where he was a farmer.⁵ He appeared on the 1852 state census of Appanoose Co, Iowa. Household: five males, one female, one veteran and one militia member.⁶ He appeared on the circa June 1856 state census of Appanoose Co, Iowa. Household: Adam Cayler (32), Mary (34), John (11), James (9), Wm (7), Albert (5), Jane (2), and Mary Hopkins (3), residing in Washington Township where Adam was a farmer, was in the militia, was the owner of his property, and was resident in the state 6 years. He had 20ac of improved land, 90ac of unimproved land and 1ac meadow. The family's agricultural information was: 4ac planted in spring wheat with 32 bushels harvested, 5ac winter wheat with 40 bushels harvested, 5ac oats with 150 bushels harvested, 14ac corn with 400 bushels harvested, 22 hogs sold at a value of $80, 7 cattle sold at a value of $117, 175 pounds butter made, 30 pounds cheese, 25 pounds wool, and $15 of domestic manufactures.⁷ He appeared on the 1860 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 8 June 1860. Household: Adam Caylor (35), Mary (30), John (14), James (13), William (10), Albert (8), Margaret (5), Alice (4), and Rosetta (1), residing in Udell Township where he was a farmer.⁸ He appeared on the 1870 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 15 June 1870. Household: Adam Caylor (46), Mary (39), Albert (18), Margaret J (15), Lucretia A (13), Rosetta (11), Adam P (8), Mary (6), Lewis (4), and David (10/12), residing in Udell Township, Unionville post office, where he was a farmer.⁹ He appeared on the 1880 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated June 1880. Household: Adam Cayler (55), Mary (wif - 50), Adam (son - 18), Mary (dau - 17), Lewis (son - 13), David (son - 10), Nelly (dau - 9), Ratchel (moth - 80), Andrew Donley (head - 62), Mary Conley (wif - 62), John Donley (son - 24), William Donley (son - 21), and Mary Donley (moth - 78), residing in Udell Township where Adam was a farmer.¹⁰ He appeared on the 1885 state census of Appanoose Co, Iowa. Household: Adam Caylor (68), Mary (56), Lewis (17), David (15), Nellie (13), and Ivy (3), residing in Udell Township where Adam was a farmer [Ivy was a granddaughter but parantage has not been determined].¹¹

Adam Caylor was mentioned in the following event: Mary Mitchell and her husband, Adam Caylor, were mentioned in Hendricks County Indiana Deed Book 74, pp 429-433, as part of an indenture for sale of her parent's property.¹² He appeared on the 1900 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 11 June 1900. Household: Adam Caylor (57), Mary (wif - 71), Ivy (grdau - 18), and [L Fleda?] (grdau - 1), residing in Udell Township where no occupation was listed for Adam.¹ In the Appanoose County probate records for 6 Jan 1902, case 2376, William Caylor was appointed guardian for Adam Caylor who was of unsound mind.³

     Adam A Caylor was born 17 May 1916 in Iowa.^1,2 He was the son of Adam Caylor and Zulia Turnbull.¹ Adam A Caylor died 24 August 1988 at age 72 (last residence was Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa).²

     Adolphus Woody Caylor was born 18 October 1891 in Farmwell, Loudoun Co, Virginia.^4,5 He was the son of John Alexander Caylor and Priscilla Anne Lefever.¹ Adolphus Woody Caylor married Edith Lola Seidner 14 September 1912 in Randolph Co, Indiana.^3,6 Adolphus Woody Caylor died in December 1970 at age 79 (last residence was Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana).^2,7

He named Mrs Edith Caylor of the same address as a person who would know his address. He worked for the T J Ault Company of Muncie; height 5'-8", wieght 185 pounds, had gray eyes, brown hair and light complexion with a stub thumb on his right hand.¹³ His Social Security Number was 312-01-7157, issued before 1951 in Indiana.⁷ He was mentioned in the obituary of Milton Edward Caylor 18 February 1966.¹⁴

     Anna E Caylor was born 22 April 1872 in the vicinity of Guilford [Sterling], Loudoun Co, Virginia, (birth record stated mother as Nancy Caylor, birth reported by Nancy Caylor, father not listed).^2,3,1,4 She was the daughter of James William Caylor and Nancy Coons.¹ Anna E Caylor married first Joseph H Ritter, son of Hiram Ritter and Hannah Rinkle, 24 November 1888 in Redkey, Richland Township, Jay Co, Indiana, (Elder John W Coons, minister, performed the ceremony - witnesses were Thomas Scott and Jos P Ritter).^3,5,6 Anna E Caylor married second William H Calhoun 4 October 1917 in Delaware Co, Indiana.^7,8
     Judy Bennett, a Caylor researcher, notes that Anna was born after the divorce and that Anna was in her great-grandfather's obituary as a half-sister. Cecil Corabel Caylor was mentioned in the following event: A picnic party of 27 went from Washington to Bluemont, Virginia on 27 Aug 1905. "After a bountiful dinner, eaten in the woods, the entire party climbed the mountain to Bear's Den for a look over the Shenandoah Valley."⁵ Miss Cecil C Caylor hosted a party for the girls of the Adah Class of the Ninth Street Christian Sunday School 6 Jan 1912. Misses Mildred Caylor and Edythe Caylor attended as did Mrs Vera Smallwood.⁷ She appeared on the 1920 federal census of Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania, in the household of James Eliot Spaulding.⁸ Cecil Corabel Caylor appeared on the 1930 federal census of Alexandria, Virginia, in the household of James Eliot Spaulding.⁹

Cecil L Caylor and John G Reeves obtained a marriage license 25 December 1883 in Jay Co, Indiana.^1,2,3 Cecil L Caylor married second Martin Edgar Coons, son of Abraham P Coons and Melissa Caylor, 5 October 1887 in Powers, Jay Co, Indiana, (Cecil and Martin were 2nd cousins as well as 3rd).¹ Cecil L Caylor died before April 1910 likely in Iowa.⁴

He named as his wife and nearest relative Winifred Irene Caylor of RFD 5, Osceola; medium height, medium build, had brown eyes and black hair.⁶ He appeared on the 1920 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 12 January 1920. Household: Charles C Caylor (40), Winifred (wif - 38), Audrey (son[sic] - 15), Iven (son - 13), Opal (dau - 12), and Jacob May (fil - 78), residing in Pleasant Township, Cincinnati, where Charles C was a farmer.⁷ He appeared on the 1 January 1925 state census of Appanoose Co, Iowa. Household: C C Caylor (46), Winnie (wif - 42), Audrey (dau - 20), Ivan (son - 18), and Opal (dau - 17), residing in Vermillion Township - he had completed the 12th grade.¹ He appeared on the 1930 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, enumerated 19 April 1930. Household: C C Caylor (52), Winnie (wif - 48), and Opal (dau - 21), residing in Vermillion Township, where C C was a farmer on his own account.⁸

     Charls Caylor was born in 1841 in Virginia.¹ He was the son of James Caylor and Mary Eleanor Maffett. Charls Caylor died in August 1849 in Loudoun Co, Virginia.¹

     Christopher Caylor was born circa 1836. He was the son of Samuel Caylor and Anna Life. Christopher Caylor died in 1837 likely in Indiana.¹

     Clarence Conner "Pete" Caylor was born 9 June 1918 in Ashburn, Loudoun Co, Virginia.^3,4 He was the son of Milton Edward Caylor and Mary Susan Vogeding. Clarence Conner "Pete" Caylor married Charlcie Mae Bell, daughter of Samuel Claude Bell and Monnie Estelle Pierson, 21 October 1944.^1,5 Clarence Conner "Pete" Caylor died 19 July 2004 at age 86 (last residence was Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia).⁴ He was buried 22 July 2004 in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, Loudoun Co, Virginia.⁶

     Claude Carlisle Caylor was born 7 July 1888 in Hunters Mill, Fairfax Co, Virginia.² He was the son of Joseph John Caylor and Edith Cockerille.³ Claude Carlisle Caylor married Alice Catherine Donnelly 18 November 1914 in St Stephens Catholic Church, Washington, DC, (a marriage announcement stated: "After a courtship lasting five years, Dr Claude Carlisle Caylor, chief of the X-ray department at Providence Hospital, and Miss Alice Donnelly, a nurse of the hospital, were married. . . by Father James Donnelly. . . .").^1,4,5 Claude Carlisle Caylor and Dorothy E Bullen obtained a marriage license 14 June 1928 in Washington, DC.^6,7 Claude Carlisle Caylor died 24 August 1955 in Salisbury, Wicomico Co, Maryland, at age 67 (occurred while vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland).^8,9 He was buried 27 August 1955 in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Prince George's Co, Maryland, (same location as his grandfather).⁸

They lived in the same dwelling as Claude's parents.¹ Claude and wife Dorothy arrived in New York on 19 Jul 1928, sailing from Southampton, England on the SS Leviathan. He stated his birth date as 7 Jul 1888, and birthplace as Hunter Mills, Virginia, and resided at 723 5th Street, Washington DC. This was certainly a honeymoon trip to Europe.¹¹ Claude C and Dorothy were listed in the 1929 Washington city directory, living at 3723 5th NE.¹² He appeared on the 1930 federal census of Washington, DC, enumerated 23 April 1930. Household: Claude C Caylor (41), Dorothy E (wif - 31), Kathryn (dau - 14), Claude C Jr (son - 8), Joan (dau - 5), and Mary (dau - 3&5/12), residing at 3733 Warren Street where he was a physician in general practice.⁶ He was mentioned in the obituary of Edith Evelyn Caylor 22 October 1936.¹³ He was listed as a physician with an office at 1029 Vermont Avenue NW and a residence at 3733 Warren NW, wife Dorothy E, in the 1941 Washington city directory.¹⁴ Claude Carlisle Caylor registered for the World War II Selective Service Draft 25 April 1942 and he lived at 225 Kennedy Drive, Kenwood, Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, Maryland. He named Mrs Dorothy E Caylor of the same address as a person who would know his address. He was self-employed at the Providence Hospital in Washington DC. A second obituary stated: "Dr Claude C Caylor Sr, 67, retired head of the department of radiology at Providence Hospital and former associate professor of radiology at Georgetown University, died unexpectedly Wednesday at a hospital in Salisbury, Md. Dr Caylor, who lived at 6108 Kennedy dr, Kenwood, Md, had been vacationing in Ocean City, Md, when he was taken ill early Wednesday. A native of Fairfax County, Va, Dr Caylor practiced medicine here from 1912 after interning for two years at Providence Hospital until his retirement in 1945. He attended elementary schools in Washington and was graduated from old Central High School in 1906. In 1910 he received his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, the American Roentgen and Ray Society, the Southern Medical Society, the American Medical Society, the District Medical Association, the Providence Hospital Alumni Association and the North American Society of Radiology. Dr Caylor is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Dr Claude Caylor Jr of 10312 Colesville rd, Silver Spring, and five daughters, Ann and Edith Caylor of the home address; Mrs Jack B Pace of 4212 Ambler dr, Kensington; Mrs Joseph P Viehmann of 5029 N 36th st Arlington, and Mrs Willis C Sirk of 3901 Everett st, Kensington."⁸

Cynthia S Caylor married Robert D Laird between 1878 and 1879.²

He worked hard and played hard, especially any type of outdoor activity. From boating and camping in the summer at Lake Thunder Head, or snow skiing in the winter, he just loved the outdoors. He was preceded in death by: his father, Richard Caylor on December 19, 1962; brother, Dale Caylor; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.      Donald Eugene Caylor was born 15 January 1894 in Linden, Dallas Co, Iowa.² He was the son of Lewis M Caylor and Martha Jane Hastings.^3,1 Donald Eugene Caylor married Grace Nora Roberts, daughter of Michael Roberts and Leota Siders, between 1921 and 1922 (she was referred to as Mrs Donald Caylor in the obituary of Clyde Roberts and the Roberts family can be found in the 1920 census for Indiana, Jay County, Richland Township, page 158B - a copy of the obituary is in my Caylor - Indiana files).⁴ Donald Eugene Caylor died 27 May 1988 in Jay County Hospital, Portland, Jay Co, Indiana, at age 94.^5,6 He was buried 31 May 1988 in Hillcrest Cemetery, Redkey, Richland Township, Jay Co, Indiana.⁵

Household: Donald Caylor (36) and Grace (wif - 30), residing in Richland Township where he was a farmer.⁴ He registered for the World War II Selective Service Draft 27 April 1942 and he lived on RR 2, Portland, Jay County, Indiana. He named Mrs Grace Caylor of the same address as a person who would know his address. He worked for himself as a farmer; height 5'-6", weight 135 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair and light complexion.⁸ His Social Security Number was 304-18-4774, issued before 1951 in Indiana.⁹ His obituary stated: "Redkey, Ind - Donald Eugene Caylor, 94, 521 W High St died Friday in Jay County Hospital
Portland. Mr Caylor, who was born in Iowa, was a farmer and was retired from Armstrong Cork Co (Kerr Glass) in Dunkirk. He was a member of the Nazarene Church of Redkey and was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Nora Roberts Caylor, a son Max W Caylor, Huntington, a sister, Mildred (Mrs. Schknowl) Imes, Redkey, and a grandson. . . ."⁶

     Dora B Caylor was born between 1867 and 1868 in Iowa.¹ She was the daughter of F Marion Caylor and Frances E Cross.¹
