She will be dearly remembered by her son, Claude (Kathy) C Caylor, III of Dallas TX; her daughter, Patricia (Warren) Voss of Muscatine, IA; her sisters, Louise (John) Walsh of Cocoa Beach, FL and Helen (Sr. Maria Corona) McGowan of Philadelphia, PA; six grand children; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.¹

The former owner of the McKinney Company is survived by his wife Carolyin, sons Henry '76 and Bill '79, two daughters and two grandsons."⁸

     Harold Iora Merchant appeared on the 1930 federal census of Adams Co, Nebraska, in his parent's household.¹ His Social Security Number was 508-18-4293, issued before 1951 in Nebraska.³ His obituary stated: "Merchant, Harold I, Sr, 80, of Clearwater, died Thursday at Oaks of Clearwater. He was born in Beatrice, Neb, and came here in 1998 from Venice. He was a design engineer for Peoples Gas Co and designed, built and operated the Monticello KOA Campground in Monticello. He received a degree in design engineering from the University of Nebraska. He was Presbyterian and served in the Army Air Forces in World War II. Survivors include his wife, May Rita; two sons, John and Harold Jr, both of St Petersburg; a daughter, Lee Ellen Merchant, San Diego; two sisters, Margaret Conley, Lombard, Ill, and Elizabeth Jones, Fort Myers; and three grandchildren. . . ."²

Household: Isaac Merchant (28), Nancy (29), Telitha (5), John (3), and Elisabeth (1), residing in Jackson Township where he was a farmer with real estate valued at $2000.¹¹ He appeared on the 1860 federal census of Paulding Co, Ohio, enumerated 27 June 1860. Household: Isaac Merchant (37), Nancy (37), Tabitha (15), John William (13), Catherine E (12), Temperance D (10), Sarah G (7), Isaac T (5), and Nancy H (3), residing in Brown Township, Charloe post office, where he was a farmer.¹²

Isaac Merchant saw military service in the Civil War where he served in Company I, 168th Ohio, National Guard Infantry.² Isaac removed to Kingston, Missouri in 1866 after returning from service in the Civil War.^2,13

Isaac Merchant appeared on the 1870 federal census of Caldwell Co, Missouri, enumerated 20 July 1870. Household: Isaac Merchant (47), Nancy (46), Sarah (17), Isaac (14), Nancy (12), Ida (7), and Laura (1), residing in Kingston Township, Mirabile post office, where he was a farmer with real estate valued at $5850 and personal property at $1200.¹⁴

Isaac came to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1873 and went to Custer County the following year where he made a homestead claim and was one of the pioneer settlers of that part of Nebraska.²

Isaac Merchant appeared on the 1880 federal census of Custer Co, Nebraska, enumerated 18 June 1880. Household: Isaac Merchant (57) and Nancy (wif - 56), residing in precinct 6 where he was a farmer.¹⁵

He sold his farm in 1885 and then lived in Broken Bow, the county seat, where he practiced law for several years.²

Isaac Merchant appeared on the 1900 federal census of Fayette Co, Ohio, in the household of James E Todhunter, his son-in-law; he was widowed.³ Isaac Merchant appeared on the 1910 federal census of Fayette Co, Ohio, enumerated 19 April 1910. Household: Isaac Merchant (87) and Julia (wif - 80), residing in Perry Township where he lived on his own income.⁹

In 1911, after visiting his native state of Ohio, he came to Adams, Gage County, where he lived at the home of his son, Isaac.² His obituary stated: "Isaac Merchant was born near Greenfield, Fayette county, Ohio, Nov 25, 1823, and died Nov 11, 1913, his age at the time of his death being 89 years, 11 months and 11 days. He was married to Miss Nancy Caylor, July 18, 1844. Eleven children were born to this union: Mrs J E Tedhunter, of Washington Court House, Ohio; John, who died in the service at Memphis, Tenn; Mrs N J Rice of Rogers, Ark; Mrs J W Young of Bedford, Iowa; Mrs W S Huffer of Springfield, Ohio; I T Merchant, of Adams, Neb; Mrs N H Alee of Syracuse, Neb; Emma, who died at Kensington, Mo, in 1872; William, who died at Washington Court House; Mrs R D Ross of Anselmo, Neb and Mrs W B Poor, of Lincoln, Neb. Mrs Merchant died March 15, 1895. Mr Merchant left Ohio about 47 years ago and went to Missouri. After living in the latter state 8 years, he spent one year in Lincoln, Neb, and then took up a homestead near Broken Bow, which was his home until his wife died. He was converted Aug 21, 1843 and united with the M E church. He often filled the pulpit when made necessary by the absense or sickness of the pastor.
He had during his life filled many positions of honor and trust. He was a life long worker in the temperence cause, and always ready to help in any movement for the betterment of mankind. His intellectuality was very marked, and he retained his mental strength in a great degree, to the last. . . . The funeral services were held in the M E church, Friday forenoon, Nov 14, 1913, under the auspices of the Masonic order, of which the deceased was an ardent supporter. Rev A S Umpleby preached the sermon and Grand Master Alpha Morgan of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska, gave an impressive address. The M E choir furnished the music. The remains were laid to rest with Masonic rites in the Broken Bow cemetery.”
A second death announcement stated: "Isaac Merchant, a former pioneer of Custer county, died at his home in the eastern part of the state Tuesday of this week. The body was brought to Broken Bow Wednesday night on No 41 and, at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, interment was made in Broken Bow cemetery, the funeral being under the auspices of Emmet Crawford ladge, A F and A M. It had always been the wish of the aged pioneer that at his death his body should be brought to Broken Bow and buried. Mr Merchant originally homesteaded near New Helena and later came to Broken Bow. He was marshal here for several years and was the one who originally platted out the city park. . . .^4,10

The following is a biographical sketch pertaining to Isaac's son, I T Merchant, from Hugh J Dobbs, History of Gage County, Nebraska (Lincoln, Nebraska: Western Publishing and Engraving Company, 1918); copy available on-line at Ancestry.com (subscription service):

"I. T. Merchant. . . . son of Isaac and Nancy (Caylor) Merchant. The father was born at a place eighteen miles southwest of Washington Court House, Ohio, on the 25th of November, 1823. He was a prosperous farmer in Ohio at the time when the Civil War was precipitated, and he showed his intrinsic patriotism by enlisting in an Ohio volunteer regiment and by serving valiantly with the same during the period of the great conflict between the states of the north and the south. When his country no longer needed his services as a soldier he returned to Ohio, and in 1866 he removed to Kingston, Missouri. In that locality he was engaged in farming until the time of his election to the position of county judge. In this office he served until 1873, when he came to Lincoln, Nebraska. In the following year he went to Custer county, this state, where he took up a homestead claim and became one of the pioneer settlers of that large and now prosperous section of Nebraska. He there continued his agricultural activities until 1885, when he sold his farm and established his residence at Broken Bow, the county seat, where he practiced law for several years thereafter. In 1911, after having spent some time in a visit to his native state, Mr. Merchant came to Adams, Gage county, where he passed the closing period of his life in the home of his son [Isaac Temple], the subject of this review, his death having here occurred November 10, 1913. His wife [Nancy Caylor] was born February 5, 1830, her birthplace having been not far distant from that of her husband, in Washington county, Ohio. She died at Broken Bow, Nebraska, January 22, 1892, and in the cemetery at that place were laid to rest the mortal remains of both her and her husband."

The following is an article from the "Custer County Chief", Spring of 1912:

"Mr Isaac Merchant in March and April 1912, spent a few weeks at the home of his daughter near New Helena. He visited Broken Bow and during his 1 day visit there he was a central figure among the old - timers in that city. M. Merchant occupies a prominent place in the history of Custer county and Broken Bow. He has been away from the County 16 years, which time he spent in Ohio. His return here now at the age of 89 years found Broken Bow transformed into a new town, with new faces, and only now and then did an old acquaintance greet him but they were mighty glad to see him.

The Chief office visited him and he spent a short time there exchanging greetings.

Mr Merchant came to Custer County, Nebraska, from Missouri State in 1875, located on Victoria Creek 1 1/2 miles down the creek from old Victoria Springs. During the summer of 1876, which was the time of the Indian scare when most settlers left the county, he remained on his claim and there he built a temporary fort, where the few men who were in the settlement came, at intervals, when they thought there were signs of Indians in the area; Mrs. Thomas Loughran, mother of Mrs Harve Andrews of Broken Bow city now, was the only woman who remained in the settlement during this scare. Mr Harve Andrews, of Broken Bow, was another of the pioneer settlers there in the summer of 1876.

Mr Merchant was active in changing the location, a few years later of the county seat from Custer, the log house capital on Spring Creek below Callaway, to Broken Bow. And during troublesome times between the cattlemen and the settlers, Mr. Merchant was very active and was known as a leader among the settlers.

At the time of the killing of old man Province (Joseph Yard Province) at Riverview on South Loup above later site of Pressey Park, on Spring Creek area, by M. Long and Mr Powell, when the homesteaders formed a mob and declared violence and vengence against these cattlemen, Mr Isaac Merchant was chosen as a leader; he proved a rational one and by his advice and counsel, he kept a mad and determined body of men from committing rash acts in retaliation for alleged injustices of the cowmen.

When Broken Bow was incorporated as a village, he was selected as one of the first trustees and he was the first chairman of that body; later on, he was appointed village marshal in Broken Bow and he proved to be a fearless officer.

Mr Merchant is remembered as a man very active in public matters. He is much gratified by the beautiful appearance of our public park and informed the Editor of THE CHIEF that he passed the subscription paper among the businessmen here, many years ago, which raised the money to purchase the trees which now adorn the park. It has been 16 years since he has been back here and in that time the town has undergone wonderful changes, he stated."

". . . . In May, 1876, there was a general uprising of the Sioux Indians, who resented the intrusion of parties who were at that time pushing through to the Black Hills. Most of the Settlers in this county packed up their goods and hastened to Loup City. We rallied a few settlers and built a fort of cedar logs. I applied to Governor Garber for fourteen stands of arms and 2,000 rounds of cartridges, which we received, and most of the families that had flown came back."

The following article was published in the "Custer County Republication", November 20, 1913:

"Last week we published the obituary of Mr Isaac Merchant an old pioneer and highly respected citizen of Custer county. At the time the news came of his death we could not get possession of all the facts in time to get them ready before the time of going to press, so will give more of his life this week.

Isaac Merchant was among the pioneers of Custer county and among the first to take a homestead in this part of Nebraska. He with his son I T Merchant, who was then about 17 years old, drove from Lincoln, the state capital to Victoria Creek in May 1874 where he located. The rest of the family came on later. It was upon this homestead that the fort was made of cedar logs by the little band of settlers, to protect themselves from raids of Indians.

He was one of the seven families who remained on the creek to protect their homes against Sioux Indians in the spring of 1876 while the other members of the settlement conducted the women and children to a place of safety (Loup City).

After many years of rustling on the farm he decided to move to Broken Bow in 1885 and was very active in church matters and public enterprises. While here he had many positions of public trust. The town at that time was a small village and much of its greatness today can be attributed to the efforts made by Mr Merchant. While occupying the position of Village Marshal he laid out and superintended the grading of the south side park, which is a pride of every citizen there. He plotted the ground for trees that were planted on Arbor Day. The various civil organizations and churches were assigned a lot to set trees in City square.

We hear old settlers speak of Mr Merchant as being a former postmaster of Broken Bow and giving much satisfaction in this office (postmaster from September 17, 1885 to June 11, 1889). He was always active in public matters and was regarded as one of Custer County's best pioneers.

The few old church members who are left with us today vividly remember the substantial aid given by Mr Merchant in the early days when the trials and hardships seemed almost greater than they could bare."

"Isaac Merchant was born near Greenfield, Fayette county, Ohio, November 25, 1823, and died November 11, 1913. His age at the time of death being 89 years and 11 months and 11 days. He was married to Miss Nancy Caylor July 18, 1844 and 11 children were born to this union, whose names are given here: Mrs J E Todhunter of Washington Court, Ohio; John Merchant who died in the service at Memphis, Tennessee; Mrs N J Rice of Rodger, Arkansas; Mrs G W Young of Bedford, Iowa; Mrs W F Huffer of Springfield, Ohio; Mrs J H Adams of Nebraska [this appears to be a mistake in the text and should probably read, Mr I T Merchant of Adams, Nebraska]; Mrs L H Allee of Sycamore, Nebraska; Emma who died at Kingston, Missouri, in 1872; William who died at Washington Court House, Ohio; Mrs R D Ross of Anselmo, Nebraska and Mr W B Poor of Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs Merchant, wife of the deceased died in March 1895 and was buried at Broken Bow.

It was some 47 years ago that Mr Merchant left Ohio and came to the west. He first came to Missouri where he lived for eight years. He then came to Lincoln and a year later was one of the very first to take a homestead near Broken Bow, where he made his home until his wife died.

He was converted August 21, 1843 and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was an able man and often filled the pulpit when made necessary by the absence or sickness of the pastor. He had during his life, filled many positions of honor and trust. He was a life long worker in the temperance cause and always ready to help in any movement for the betterment of man kind. His intellectuality was very marked and he retained his mental strength in a great degree to the last.

His knowledge of men and events was unusually great. His life has been spent and he has left behind him a noble record. His confidence in God was firm and his hope in heaven bright. His friends, whom have cared for him so tenderly during his age and sickness, can have great satisfaction and comfort in looking back over his long and well spent life.

When Mr Merchant was here a year ago he requested that his funeral services should be directed by the Masonic Order of this city. He was at that time very feeble and knew that life's journey was not far off, in accordance with his request, the funeral services took place this morning at the Methodist church under the auspices of the Masonic Order.

Reverend A L Upleby, preached the sermon and Mr Morgan gave an excellent address. After the remains were laid to rest with Masonic rites in the Broken Bow cemetery."

     Isaac Temple Merchant was born 19 March 1856 in Paulding Co, Ohio.² He was the son of Isaac Merchant and Nancy Caylor.¹ Isaac Temple Merchant married first Susan M Bishop in October 1880.^3,4 Isaac Temple Merchant married second Sarah E North, daughter of James North and Mary Kirkpatrick, 4 September 1900 in Port Dover, Norfolk Co, Ontario, Canada.³
     Isaac Temple Merchant appeared on the 1860 federal census of Paulding Co, Ohio, in his parent's household.⁵ He appeared on the 1870 federal census of Caldwell Co, Missouri, in his parent's household.⁶ He graduated from the high school in Kingston, Missouri in 1873, and the family removed to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he became bookkeeper in his father's hotel. In 1874 he went with his parents to Broken Bow where he entered a homestead claim and raised sheep and cattle. He finally disposed of his farm and moved into Broken Bow where he became deputy sheriff of Custer County.² He became postmaster at Broken Bow and held that office until 1890, when he engaged in buying and shipping grain and live stock until 1893.² He appeared on the 1880 federal census of Custer Co, Nebraska, enumerated 18 June 1880. Household: Isaac T (23), Ida B (sis - 18), and Laura E (sis - 10), residing in precinct 6, where he was a farmer.⁷ In 1893 he became a keeper in the shops of the Nebraska penitentiary at Lincoln. The next year he went to Toronto, Canada where he became actively identified with lumbering enterprise.² Not in US census for 1900 but likely in Ontario, Canada. In 1900 he established residence at Liberty, Gage County, Nebraska where he engaged in the buying and shipping of grain for the next nine years. He then moved to the village of Adams in Gage County where he continued in buying and shipping grain and other farm produce until 1913, when he was appointed postmaster of Adams.¹ He appeared on the 1910 federal census of Gage Co, Nebraska, enumerated 19 April 1910. Household: Isaac T Merchant (54) and Sarah E (wif - 46), residing on Ash Street, Adams, where he was a produce dealer.⁸ He was mentioned in the obituary of Isaac Merchant 17 November 1913.^9,10 Isaac Temple Merchant appeared on the 1920 federal census of Gage Co, Nebraska, enumerated 3 January 1920.
